Nerve Damage (Compressed Nerves) In Arm - How Long to Heal?

I have nerve problems in my right arm & hand since March 2011 after a sleeping incident. My right arm was squashed under my right thigh during deep sleep. It was paralyzed for a few minutes after waking up & problems started in that arm. I felt pain & weakness in the arm all the way to my hand & fingers. It also feels a lot of tingling & was very sensitive such as to cold water & bumping into things make a shocking feel. It was badly bent & I had had extreme difficulties to use my right hand for a few months. I been to the Neurologist back in August & he did an electroshock session with my right arm, hand & fingers. I didn't remember everything he said but my arm had weak nerves that have been compressed & weakened or damaged. The muscle in the right arm also been affected too, controlled by weak nerves. I'm not seeing any doctors anymore, they said it will take time to heal & recover but not sure how long. I'm really annoyed & still worrying. It still does some tingling & fingers are not fully straight yet. It is a little better nowadays but very slow recovery. It really bothers me & a huge nuisance! I wonder how long approximately until it returns to normal strength & everything all recovers? Do I need to see a doctor again?

Matthew,

When you say you were paralyzed for a few minutes, I assume you mean your arm was paralyzed.

According to my research (How Long Does It Take For Nerves To Heal?, internet research, so take it for what it's worth), it generally takes 3-6 months for nerves to heal and repair themselves with some nerve repair taking up to 18 months. After the nerve is healed it may take an additional several months for the muscle to come back (depending on a variety of factors).

So it's already been 8 months since your initial nerve damage. Have you taken steps to prevent further nerve damage like wearing arm shields at night when you sleep? Are you also taking the appropriate vitamins and nerve building supplements and performing therapy on your hand, fingers and arm to speed up the healing process?

You indicate "it is a little better nowadays" so that seems to be an indication of healing. If I were you I would double my efforts and do everything that I could to speed the healing process. Lifting light weight dumbbells wouldn't hurt either.

Whether to see a doctor again is up to you. If you can afford it and want assurances that your condition is getting better, then by going back to your doctor and having him do additional tests, he may be able to compare your "before and after" test results as positive signs of improvement. It may give you peace of mind.

Good luck,

Tanner
