Numbness & Weakness In Hands |
The following post from our Muscle Atrophy & Ulnar Nerve Damage page is from a woman whose husband has been having numbness and weakness in both hands but so much worse in his left. He had the gastric bypass surgery in Nov and has lost over 100 lbs so we just assumed his hands just looked skinny due to the weight loss. That wasn't the case.

My husband as been having numbness and weakness in
both hands but so much worse in his left. He had the
gastric
bypass surgery in Nov and has lost over 100 lbs
so we just assumed his hands just looked skinny due
to the weight loss. We went to the dr to find out why he had the numbness and weakness and the dr pointed out that his left hand was badly atrophied and looks just like your right hand. His right one also has some but not nearly as bad as his left. At his job he is on the computer quite a bit and at home on weekends he plays online poker which is when he first noticed the numbness. So, now he is going to have to go through the tests to find out exactly what is causing it and what they can do. They said most likely surgery. They also said that this is the worst case he has seen in a long time, which was not only upsetting but very discouraging, but then he did say there is still hope because he does still have movement in his fingers although they are weak. So, we are looking on the upside that it'll be fine. Your hand exercises really have made a difference then? I gave him a ball to squeeze on now and then. Anymore suggestions other than what you already posted on here to help strengthen his hands so he can regain more use of his hands. Thank you! Julie |

Sounds like the doctor needs lessons to improve
his bedside manner.
I do attribute the strength and dexterity of my hand to the exercises that I have done for it. I don't think that an occasionally squeeze on a ball now and then will do it for your husband, although it's a good place to start. It's probably going to take a lot more than that (daily exercise routines, throughout the day, with dumbbells, finger pulling, hand/finger exercises and such). Even now, when I am watching TV or sitting at the computer, I stretch/pull on my fingers and do little isometric exercises to maintain them. I am also very careful as to how I position my arms so not to cause any further damage to my ulnar nerve. Good luck to your husband. Best regards, Tanner |
