I actually was relieved to a point by this page, my left hand looks just like the picture. Now my dilemma, I have no medical insurance, so could you tell me the shortest route to go now that I know what it is? I cannot afford to go to all different appointments. Any sugestions would be greatfully appreciated. Sincerely, Teresa

I'm not really sure what you mean by "the shortest route to go now that you know what it is". You can't be positive of what you have be reading a website. Our hands may look alike, but the causes of how they get that way may be totally different. Only the doctors can tell you.

That's my hand in the picture and even with all the testing and all the doctors that I have seen, they're not 100% sure what caused the atrophy in my hand. The pinching of my ulnar nerve was their best guess, but they could not tell me if it would get any worse.

I was fortunate to remember the soreness (before my muscle loss) of my inner arm as it rubbed against the arm rest of my chair and where I rested my arm on the corner of the desk as I worked on the computer. In my case I feel fairly confident that the pinching of the ulnar nerve caused my muscle loss.

Once I found out what the problem was, the only thing left for me to do was to prevent it from getting any worse and to try to improve the strength and dexterity of my hand. I had the option of getting the nerve surgically relocated to another position in my arm but I decided against that. Instead I decided just to be careful on how I positioned my arm to prevent further pinching of the nerve. I will have to do that the rest of my life but as of now it comes naturally.

Hand and finger exercises will help to increase your strength and dexterity but they won't help the way your hand looks.

I can't really advise you on what to do because I'm just a patient and not a doctor. I don't want to give you any bad advice.

One thing though, this happened to me a few years ago and it hasn't gotten any worse, so hopefully what I am doing is working for me.

Good luck, Tanner
