The following post from our Muscle Atrophy & Ulnar Nerve Damage page is from a woman who had fusion in her neck and when she woke up her left hand had pain, numbness and tingling. The doctor who did the EMG told her it was the worst ulnar nerve test results that he has ever seen.

I had a fusion in my neck and when I woke up from surgery my left had ( I am left handed) was hurting and numb and tingling, felt weak and just didn't stop. It was right up there with the pain I was having as far as being annoying and hurting. After 1 year of this pain and numbness I had it checked out and an EMG and found that I had the worse "Ulnar nerve results" this Dr, who had done thousands of them, had ever seen. I eventually had surgery on the ulnar nerve and was told it would take a long time for it to recover because nerves recover slower than anything in the body. Now a year later I still have the numbness and cannot type like I used to and my handwriting went in the toilet. I swear this all happened when they did my neck surgery (which by the way is failed and the disc above is now herniated) I am told to return to my neck surgeon but will NOT after the results from the surgery I had with him and its total failure and the ulner nerve situation but am puzzled at what I should do. Do I find another Surgeon to fix my neck again and hope for better results (I came out of 1st surgery in 3 or 4 times more pain) or live with what pain I have and not risk another surgery? I can no longer work and with my other ailments the pan is constant and only the pain meds make it tolerable. So I guess besides 'dropping my arm in surgery while I was out' could my neck surgeon have done something to cause the ulnar nerve damage? Deb

Sorry to hear about what has happened to you.

It's anybody's guess what happened during your surgery. You will never know if the surgeon did something to cause it or if it would have happened anyway.

I can see why you are frustrated and confused as what to do next.

If your choices are limited to live with it or get another operation, why not go to a few more surgeons for a second or third opinion. Being well informed and getting as many facts as you can makes you feel better and able to make a smarter decision.

If you decide to postpone another operation or decide against it you might try concentrating on exercise, supplements and nutrition. I am a firm believer in exercise and nutrition. I don't know if I am just lucky or if it's from the exercise that I did (and do) but three years ago I was told that I needed a operation to fix four discs in my neck. Ever since I got that news I exercised daily, took supplements and ate only healthy foods. Over time, the numbness in my hands and arms disappeared. Even the dexterity and strength in my right hand increased. Even though the muscle lost (due to atrophy) never grows back the other muscles can strengthen to compensate for it. It might be worth a try.

Good luck. Tanner
